What Is Concrete Polishing?
Concrete polishing is a multi-step process that transforms ordinary concrete into a high-gloss, mirror-like surface using progressively finer diamond grinding tools. It is one of the most sustainable and cost-effective flooring options available today.
The Polishing Process
Concrete polishing begins with coarse diamond segments that remove surface imperfections, stains, and any existing coatings. Each successive pass uses finer diamonds, gradually refining the surface from a matte finish to a high-gloss shine. A chemical densifier is applied during the process to harden and seal the concrete, making it more resistant to wear and moisture penetration.
Levels of Polish
Polished concrete comes in different levels of sheen, from a flat matte finish (400 grit) to a high-gloss mirror finish (3000 grit). The level of polish you choose depends on your aesthetic preference, the space’s function, and your maintenance goals. Higher gloss levels reflect more light but may show scratches more easily in high-traffic areas.
Where Concrete Polishing Shines
Retail stores, restaurants, offices, museums, showrooms, and warehouses all benefit from polished concrete. It is particularly popular in LEED-certified green buildings because it uses the existing concrete slab and eliminates the need for floor coverings. Many big-box retailers and grocery chains have adopted polished concrete as their standard flooring.
Longevity and Maintenance
A properly polished concrete floor can last the lifetime of the building with minimal maintenance. Daily dust mopping and periodic wet mopping are all that is required. Unlike coatings that eventually wear and need replacement, polished concrete can be re-polished to restore its original luster, making it a truly long-term flooring solution.
