How Are Epoxy Floors Installed?

Professional epoxy floor installation is a multi-step process that requires expertise, specialized equipment, and attention to detail. Understanding the process helps you appreciate why professional installation delivers superior results compared to DIY approaches.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is the most critical step in epoxy installation. The concrete must be profiled using diamond grinding or shot blasting to create a rough texture that allows the epoxy to bond mechanically. Any cracks, spalls, or imperfections are repaired with epoxy-based patching compounds. This step alone can take an entire day for a typical garage.

Step 2: Moisture Testing

Before applying any coating, the concrete must be tested for moisture vapor transmission. Excess moisture can cause delamination and coating failure. Professional installers use calcium chloride tests or relative humidity probes to ensure the slab is within acceptable limits.

Step 3: Primer Application

A penetrating epoxy primer is applied to the prepared surface. This primer soaks into the concrete pores, creating a strong foundation for the subsequent coating layers. The primer must cure fully before the next step, typically 12–24 hours depending on temperature and humidity.

Step 4: Base Coat and Decorative Elements

The epoxy base coat is mixed and applied at the specified thickness. For flake systems, decorative chips are broadcast into the wet epoxy. For metallic systems, metallic pigments are manipulated using specialized techniques to create flowing patterns. The base coat must cure before the final step.

Step 5: Topcoat

A clear polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat is applied to seal and protect the base layer. This topcoat provides UV resistance, chemical resistance, and the desired gloss level. After curing for 24–72 hours, the floor is ready for foot traffic, with full chemical resistance developing over 7 days.
